Why do people send horses to sale yards?
And what happens to horses who end up in the sale yards?
We help find horses homes who are destined for the sale yards, bound for dog food factories. Yep, they are disregarded, disposed of and dumped in sales yards for a few hundred dollars in payment, and the sale yard buyers are looking for meat. Horse meat to be specific. It’s cheap, tasty and no one really knows about it.
Except us.

Rescue Horse Foster Homes Inc (ABN 93 765 892 578) was formally registered with the ACNC on 10 November 2015 and was originally founded in 2010. Our purpose is to protect and rehome horses destined for the sale yards where they are bought for dog food ingredients.
Here at Rescue Horses FH’s, we believe humans and horses are akin, and we believe in the powerful effect of mutual healing through the human-horse relationship. This is a scientifically proven therapy model based on the wonderful qualities of the horse to sense and react to human emotions.
Our goal is to rescue ALL the unwanted, abused and abandoned horses in Victoria and keep them from the slaughterhouse. However, we can’t do it alone.
We need volunteers for:
- Land to keep the horses in until their forever owner is found
- Trainers to help train newly acquired distressed horses
- Horse travel vehicles
- Administrative work
- Social media help
- Fundraising
And of course we desperately need donations to help us continue our work.
